Game Day Expectations of EOSC Referees

When 'turning-up' for your assigned games:

  1. Be on time. To prepare for a match you are required to be present one half hour before scheduled kick-off.
  2. Arrive looking sharply dressed.  Come in the appropriate uniform with your shirt tucked in and your socks pulled up.  Dress and act like a professional and you will command respect even before game time.
  3. Introduce yourself to other referees.  Shake hands with the rest of the referee team, and promptly set about your pre-game (under the direction of the center referee).
  4. Conduct pre-game meeting with referee team.  Your pregame will involve discussions with other members of the referee team about roles and responsibilities during the pre-game, game and post-game and will require that you or one of the other referees assigned to the game will inspect the field of play, the goals, field markings, players and their equipment.  You will resolve how long halfs are to be, how long half-time is to be, and when and for how long water breaks will be scheduled.
  5. Introduce referee team to the coaches.  Shake hands with both coaches, communicate decisions made during your pre-game about the conduct of the match.
  6. Check in teams before the match.  This involves both checking player passes and inspecting players uniform and equipment.  Player passes are to be verified before every match. This means reading every player’s player pass name, asking them to step forward, examining their picture and confirming the player's identify before allowing them to participate in the match.  If this simple procedure is not followed, then it is impossible to enforce the rules of competition.  FYSA rules and bylaws, the requirements of the league, and direction provided by club administrators cannot be enforced if player passes are not verified.  The consequence of not verifying player passes is that players may play for teams to which they are not registered, players who are too old play may play, and players that are suspended or barred from competing may play.  No Pass - No Play.
  7. Stay up with the play. In the course of play, irrespective of the age group, please stay up with the play. You will have fewer disagreements with coaches and spectators when you are seen to be in the vicinity of play when you make a call that would otherwise warrant dispute.
  8. Always be respectful.  At all times - behave appropriately toward fellow referees, coaches, players and fans.
  9. Smile and enjoy the game!  Let your personality, engagement in and enthusiasm for the game show.  Be seen to enjoy the job you are doing - it will influence both the players and fans - and can make the experience more enjoyable for everyone.
  10. Know your limitations.  Do not accept matches that exceed your fitness level, familiarity with the rules or ability to referee.
